Jogo do Pau – stick fighting

Jogo do Pau or Portuguese stick fighting is a contemporary martial art with an unbroken link to older historical fencing, although with an unknown start date, and focuses on group combat where one faces many and vice versa. We practice this martial art with all its elements and draw many similarities to the historical Iberian two-handed sword called Montante.

The course

We practice Jogo do Pau on Wednesdays from 18:30 to 21:00 during the spring and autumn semesters. The rest of the year outdoors from 18.00 to 20.00 on Mondays and Wednesdays. We do not divide our training between basic and advanced training.

Equipment and knowledge requirements

The course has no equipment or knowledge requirements other than training shoes and training clothes. We lend you a staff initially, but would like to see that you eventually get one of your own to use and take care of.

The vision for the group

Our goal is to train and preserve this ancient Portuguese martial art as honestly as we can. The persistent may one day share in its traditional roots.

Practical application

The staff in Jogo do Pau is about 160 cm long and is used with both hands. It is both a shock and impact weapon depending on the situation.
